Steam Inhalation

THERAPEUTIC USE OF VOLATILE OILS

STEAM INHALATION - TENT METHOD

 

  1. Boil 2-3 cups of water, and remove from heat.  You may transfer water to a heavy porcelain or glass (Pyrex) bowl to reduce chances of accidental burning.
  2. Add 5-10 drops of essential oil
  3. Position self so that head is above container of water, no closer than 9 inches, and drape towel (bath size best) over head and bowl, forming a tent.
  4. Inhale vapor with slow, deep breaths for 5-10 minutes.
  5. Repeat as directed (2-3 times a day)

 

STEAM INHALATION - MUG METHOD

  1. Fill mug 1/2 full with boiling water.
  2. Add 3-5 drops of essential oil
  3. Position mug at nose level, with free hand forming a “cup” over nose and mug, to enclose vapors and to secure positioning.
  4. Inhale vapors 3-5 minutes
  5. Repeat as directed

STEAM INHALATION - BATH METHOD

  1. Draw a hot bath, with windows and doors shut.
  2. Enter tub, then add 10-15 drops of essential oil
  3. Swirl water around to aid dispersion of oil
  4. Relax in tub 15-30 minutes, taking slow, full, deep breaths.

Caution:  This method MAY BE CONTRAINDICATED with certain conditions and certain essential oils!  Check with your clinician.

MODIFIED BATH METHOD

  1. Prepare container of boiling water, as in STEAM INHALATION - TENT METHOD
  2. Draw a warm/tepid bath, with windows and doors shut.
  3. Bring container of water into bathroom and add 10-15 drops of essential oil
  4. Relax in tub 15-30 minutes, taking slow, full, deep breaths.

HANDKERCHIEF METHOD

  1. Place 1-2 drops of essential oil on a clean handkerchief.
  2. With handkerchief in cupped hands, position hands over nose and inhale slowly and deeply.
  3. Continue for 1-3 minutes as needed.

Some essential oils may cause discoloration.

PILLOWCASE METHOD

Place 2-3 drops of essential oil on edge of pillowcase, before using pillow (sleep, nap, etc.)
